Cover cropping systems hold significant promise for enhancing the sustainability of perennial vegetable production. This project explored the use of diverse cover crop species, including sorghum, clovers, buckwheat, and other species, as part of an intercropping and high-residue system in strawberry and artichoke production. The study aimed to evaluate the long-term weed suppression potential of these cover crops while maintaining productivity in these perennial systems. By integrating high-residue cover crops, the research investigated the dynamics of weed control over time, soil health benefits, and potential trade-offs with crop yields. Findings from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how diversified cover crop systems can support more sustainable, resilient, and economically viable approaches for specialty crop production.
